Mr. Sloan is a Teacher, Musician & Lawyer
Zak Sloan joined the PPA faculty as the 6th and 7th grade history teacher in 2021. After earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Tech University, Zak went on to graduate from the University of New Mexico School of Law and practice law advocating for abused and neglected children before returning to the classroom.
Many PPA faculty members are artistic professionals. Zak is a musician, singer, songwriter, and music producer, but teaching is his priority.
Why is teaching important to you?
“Music is the one through-line in my life. I enjoy my successes as a musician, but I love teaching. Before coming to PPA I taught at a more traditional school. I really wanted to teach at a performing arts school. It’s a ton of fun.”
What excites you about coming to PPA every day?
“Our kids are really diverse and hilarious. My cheeks are currently sore from smiling so much. All the students get along so well. I teach them history, but I can also talk to these very different kids about everything from heavy metal, sports, Taylor Swift, and ballet.”
How do you challenge your students?
“During block scheduling we have more time to dive deep. Recently during a lesson comparing the cultures of the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas students in different classes reviewed each other’s work and found ways to add content. They ended up collaboratively crafting really impressive essays. It was fun to see them engaged in a difficult assignment that ultimately improved upon their work.”
