We’re Head Over Heels about Movement Class!

In addition to being foundational for all the arts we teach, movement benefits our youngest learners in the classroom, too.

The Fundamentals of Movement

3 Parker Performing Arts elementary students execute backbends while standing on the stage during a performance.

During the Elementary Performing Arts Encore class, Tumbling/Movement, students learn the fundamentals of body movement as it relates to acrobatics. Because we practice the art of education at PPA and combine academics with all the arts, kids are studying their bodies’ muscular systems and gaining a better understanding of how their bodies work.

From cartwheels to back walkovers, we start with the basics and end up with more advanced movement and tumbling skills. Students then incorporate these into dance as they learn break, ballet, tap, jazz, and modern.

The Benefits of Movement

Studies show that giving elementary students opportunities to move during the school day not only helps them learn more about how their bodies work, it improves their overall health, academic performance, and social/emotional well-being.

Two Parker Performing Arts School elementary students, a boy and a girl, practice movement in front of their classmate.

PPA’s movement class provides an encouraging and safe environment for elementary students to stretch their bodies and their minds every day. As they move, students increase their spatial awareness and physical mobility. At Parker Performing Arts School (PPA), the only arts-focused K-8 tuition-free public school in Douglas County, our elementary students truly get up and move!

Prior experience in gymnastics, tumbling, or dance are not required. In fact, PPA is a no-audition school, open to any child interested in exploring the arts. During movement class students test their own boundaries and abilities. By the time they enter middle school in the 5th grade, students will have a strong grasp of the capabilities of their own bodies and an awareness of how to use their bodies in a physical space.

Learning these skills prepares K-4 students to participate in all the arts electives we offer here. Sign up for a school tour and learn more about everything we have here at PPA.
